Andrew Almanza is a multidisciplinary visual artist exploring the ideas surrounding affective science and ways of creating visual representations of emotional states. Most recently, Andrew has started to explore ideas of involuntary memories, how they are triggered, and why those triggers lead to specific moments in our consciousness. Along with this, Andrew also explores the emotions involved within family relationships as well as personal and romantic ones, and more specifically, attempting to create an ambiguous moment in his work, “almost a calm before the storm, where I am not fully comprehending what is happening, but cognizant of the fact that I have arrived in the wake of some tragedy or am about to witness it” –Andrew Almanza.
Born in California, raised in Evergreen Colorado, I have always been a bit of a nomad. Spent some time on the East Coast, Las Vegas, Utah, and few other places for extended visits. This due largely to the fact that I lived the proverbial rags to riches, and then the not so gracious, riches to rags story, ask me about it sometime. This led to some humbling experiences and finding an outlet for myself in painting. I have been lucky enough to have had my paintings exhibited in various places throughout Colorado including Wazee Union, and the Philip J Steele Gallery. I have also managed to rustle up some curatorial experience in site specific and installation based art via my time spent at Black Cube Nomadic Art Museum.
